Balvenie Rare Craft

It’s a cool night, breezy and pleasant. The afternoon was spent rambling about in Soho and then in Chelsea.

It’s your first time out on the High Line and it’s beautiful. But really, it’s the company that makes the day and you bask in the waning sunlight as he recounts the day’s events.

He’s cute, a bit on the thin side for your preference but kind and warm. And he pulls off the black aviator sunglasses like nobody’s business.

Pretty soon, you’ve reached the warehouse where the rare craft event is being held. He hands you a cup of water-you need before tasting the whiskey-and you take a seat by the entrance.

He goes to get you a dram of whiskey and one by one members of your party starts to arrive.

You greet everyone cheerily, it’s amazing how close you feel to them even though it’s only your second time meeting them.

The even opens and the majority of your group heads into the main waiting area but you remain outside waiting for one more of your party to arrive.

You see him first. Dressed in a burgundy shirt with these adorable suede elbow patches-incidentally they are the same hue as the famed whiskey, the star of the evening-and a holding a large plastic pink bag filled with god only knows.

He’s exactly as you remember him, if not a hair shorter than your memory, and with fine lines around the corners of his eyes. Laugh lines. He’s aged a bit.

Again, like the fine whiskey. There’s nothing stale or boring about him.

You’re immediately taken and your pulse quickens. What was it about this Korean boy?

You’re taken back to all those years ago when you first met him, visiting, from LA with some of the Korean Bethelites.

It was at a popular Korean fast food restaurant with your family also in tow and it had been brief but somehow you couldn’t help but talk about him. All the time.

But as is the case with most things, he’d ended up fading from the forefront of your mind. Another year, two would pass before you saw him again, in LA with your father while he was out in California for a business trip.

And you’d been shocked by how quickly you fell in love all over again-after all it’d been years and for only an hour tops that you’d met the guy. You see him for all of 30 minutes this time around and he’s not even sitting with you.

He’s helping customers while his mother, beautiful like a doll, entertains you. He gives you a cup of barley tea in passing and your fingers briefly touch. But that’s the extent.

And so you go on with your life (after driving the sisters crazy with your incessant talk about him when you return home to the East Coast after a few days).

He fades again. Even when your sister talks about meeting him (she’s in the business and now accompanying the dad in his business trips), you smile and nod.

After all, it’s been a while. You can vaguely remember his face but not really.

You find him in mutual friends’ instagram posts. It makes you smile but doesn’t set your heart aflutter.

So why is it that in the first few minutes of seeing him again, your face is flushed and your pulse quick?

Surely, it’s not the whiskey-after all you’ve only taken the smallest of sips.

His face is kind, his smile is endearing and the timber of his laugh gives you shivers.

But during the event, it’s hard to make conversation with him so you flit around, meet new people. You see an old friend-well actually he’s the husband of an old friend- and you reintroduce yourself.

It’s fun and his friends are nice-they’re all in the ASL congregation in Jersey City-and one in particular catches your eye. He looks like an old flame and he’s beautiful but his ring catches your eye and understanding floods through.

You make your way back to your own group and make your way out of the building through a loft elevator-it’s rustic and reminiscent of an old world New York and the ride down is magical.

You catch glimpses of the lights and buildings and of him and you have to take a few deep breaths to steel yourself.

Once you’re out on the street, he offers to take your bag and then suddenly does so despite your protests and the gesture melts your soul like molten honey.

He ends up walking ahead with another friend but somehow, you end up side by side and the conversation is easy. He tells you that he used to be a mortgage banker and while it sounds quite dreary to you (you’ve never like numbers quite so) you smile and say it must mean he’s smart.

He says he admires that you haven’t gone into the family business. You tell him about your job, nursing in general, commuting to Bethel-why can’t everything be this easy?

You’re completely taken with how easily he laughs and his slight accent-it’s hard to place but it sounds almost Korean and LA. Either way, it’s incredibly charming and the negative feelings towards Korean men is rapidly ebbing.

Please say he’s not dating. Please say he’s not dating. Please say he’s not dating.

(You’ve got a strange penchant for inadvertently crushing on taken men. Please say he’s not dating!)

Dinner is fun and it’s almost too much to be sitting diagonally from him-the lights are too bright, his eyes twinkle and his skin is perfect without a single blemish.

Again-that smile! He kills you with that smile-it’s shy and brazen all at once and you you keep craving it like some drug.

And that laugh? It’s golden, it rings across every other sound in the loud cacophony of sounds that is NYC at night.

For round three, they take you to this divey bar with lights strung up. Old school kpop tunes flood loudly and wordly Korean men with their flamboyant styles drunkenly stare unabashedly.

It reminds you briefly why you had such a negative perception of Korean men.

But no matter. The company you’re in is incredible and they don’t hold a candle to him anyways.

That golden laugh again when you take a sip of the soju and declare it sweet.

It’s true that you haven’t had soju much-your family is much more into whiskeys and wines.

He’s playful and suggests a game of knocking off the wiring off the soju bottle’s cap.

Loser drinks a soju/beer bomb.

But afterwards, conversation shifts to ideal types and would you rathers. He’s amazed by your declaration of having crushed on one of his friends for a long time-actually everyone is-but he seems to pay more attention.

Is it just in your head but does he seem to look your way quite frequently?

It’s probably your friend sitting next to you.

Nope-your eyes meet and you wish the confidence you normally have to just brazenly stare into people’s eyes didn’t have to shrink away every time you caught sight of his.

The evening goes by way too quickly and soon it’s already 11:30 and you have to get going.

He picks up the tab.

Is it possible to be even more infatuated with him at that moment?

And his hands-the briefests of touches here and there-so soft, so warm.

He’s like a friend, a child, a man all in one.

When you text with him later on back in the safety of your home, you can hear his voice, a soft tenor full of warmth, through his words.

You add him to your list of friends.

And go to bed thinking of his smile.

HOME ALONE

So sadness, yes.

My mom and sisters are currently in Korea. For one whole month. 🙁

Plus my dad’s away on business because of course he is. And while I could have spent the night alone, Grandma somehow got wind that I was going to be alone (god forbid!) and she insisted that I stay with her at her house.

Womp womp. OMG I’m 27, I can stay home alone.

(Although truth be told, I’ve been watching Criminal Minds and was a teensy, tiny bit scared-but no worries, I’ll be fine!)

But yeah, a lot’s happened since the last time that I was here!

For one thing, the weekend of August 22, 23 I did service with J and TJK and in the evening we hung out at Hoboken Pier 13-and it was so so nice! I took JH with me because omg I was not about to go alone!

And I didn’t think the boys would come but they did! And the weather was so breezy and we watched the sun go down, the rays reflecting brilliantly off the buildings! And then the lights came on, the string lights that all al frescoe Italian restuarants seems to have and they played Frank Sinatra (um, Sinatra Park!) and it was so lovely!

Did I ever mention JH’s eyes are so blue they’re mesmerizing?! Well if I haven’t, then they are and I had a momentary crush on him on account of his beautiful blues (although my Grandma would have a MI, for some reason, she’s afraid of blue eyes lol!)

And then the next weekend was a Patterson weekend which was fun–the same old although since a lot of the former residents have passed away, it was kinda sad. 🙁

And it wasn’t so busy! But still.

The weekend after that-hmmm what did I do?? oh yeah! I hung out with RR and C and C (2 new girls that are working at Warwick!) and RR slept over. That was fun too, because I haven’t hung out with RR in the longest time and even my sisters enjoyed themselves!

We went to the Willowbrook Mall, then had soondoobu and bingsu at Cafe Bene (had I known that Coco Loko had better bingsu, we’d have gone there, lol!) before going home and having shots of soju whilst talking of boys.

Of course a bunch of girls together will be talking about boys but apparently, JA is the most popular. Go figure. And I don’t know why LM is not 🙁

Oh! And Big news! Apparently, RR used to like RC! Can you believe it?! I had no idea but HL told me about it and told me to keep on the DL. No wonder she laughed so hard when my sisters said he looked like the Keebler elf! haha!

After that, it was Labor Day and I spent the day shopping with my mom, we hit up Woodbury before going to Neiman Marcus so she could get some gifts for her sisters lol which ended up being YSL lipsticks.

Then on Friday was J.M’s wedding to AU. OMG THE WEDDING WAS FANTASTIC!

First off, the venue-fabulous!

The food-amazing!

And a professional photobooth?!? I’m sold! I had such a good time with my workmates and my supervisor and manager! It was brilliant! And then the party favors! OMG J totally overdid it, she set the wedding standard so freaking high! It blows all the other weddings I’ve ever been to out of the water!

(Except for the ceremony, of course, lol. It was done by a bishop/rabbi! How does that even work?! I swear those are so dumb!)

I want to get married at the Pleasantdale Chateaux too, if I could afford it! (She said it was $275 per person! 275!!)

And then the next day was GIlead Grad but I couldn’t go because the brothers at Patterson didn’t send me my ticket via email. Oh wells. I guess I’ll have to watch it on JWTV

Spent the day out in service with my sisters 🙂

Then on Sunday, JH gave the talk at our hall and it was nice-easy-ish to understand and he translated into english words that we wouldn’t have known so I was appreciative of that. And then hospitality at It’s Greek to Me-lol a throwback to the Gs which come to think of it weren’t there at the meeting on Sunday 🙁

After that, I went to RP’s place in Brooklyn for a gathering and met a whole bunch of other people! I had the most brilliant time and they are my kind of people, they like to drink whiskey and everything! We played Bbong and the loser had to have Bbundaegi (which admittedly is not that bad a byulchik but oh wells lol!)

Afterwards, we made plans to all go to this Balvenie Event in NYC for free whiskey tastings! That’s in Oct 8 🙂

I might invite a few of my own friends and we shall see how it goes!

But that gets me to this Monday-can you believe I actually cried as I waved goodbye to my mom and sisters?!

OMG I’m going to miss them so much!!

Sniff then we did this video chat today and I teared up again! OMG How am I going to last an entire month without them?!

And then today they will be getting their consults so by tomorrow night!! OMG I’m super looking forward to their results. I pray it comes out well!

And daddy went to LA-he said he arrived well and was in good spirits when I spoke with him earlier.

Sigh. Had dinner with the grandparents and then went for massages with grandma! That was one of the nicest things I think I’ve ever done with her before so I’m glad we did so!

Although my back feels like it’s all bruised up and sore. Ugh, I’m definitely going to feel it tomorrow. But hey! Atleast my knots were worked on! He definitely knew where I was stiff and worked on them the most.

And Grandma was so excited, she was like, I can get used to this haha!

But now it seems like she fell asleep on our couch so I should sign off so we can go back to their place. I’m spending the night there lol!

xoxo

hoping the time just flies by!

I fail at being regular!

So things have been pretty busy-there a few things that happened since the last time I’ve written:

1. JM and AU’s wedding at the Pleasantdale Chateaux in NJ-beautiful, beautiful wedding, omg i think I’m ruined for all other venues. Seriously was the most beautiful wedding I’ve been to, EVER. No other place compares-the beautiful estate, the pool, the wonderfully high vaulted ceilings with the intricate moldings!

And the food! It was so good, seriously! And loved the desserts served like hor deouvers (or however that’s spelt-I’m not French!)

AND! A professional photo booth! That was the best part, seriously I had so much fun with all of my co workers! 😀

Beautiful venue!

Beautiful venue!

2. Dinner at RP and EP’s place in Brooklyn where I got to meet all these really cool NYC JWs (Korean ones, of course!) And it was loads fun!

We played bbong with eating bbundaegi as the punishment haha! The punishment wasn’t too horrible IMO, even though it is silk worm larvae :T

(I thought it was just the case after it was done molting but NO, apparently it’s the REAL THING! O_O)

3. MY MOM AND SISTERS WENT TO KOREA!! T__T

That’s the worst one! Ugh it’s from like 9/14/2015 to 10/18/2015 which is MORE THAN ONE MONTH! But thankfully it’s now the 10/10 so just a little over a week to go, thank goodness! We’ve been keeping in touch with kakao messaging and video calls-thank goodness for technology as well haha!

They’ve been having fun it seems and I’ve been keeping busy, I’m actually doing housework and stuff.

And I’ve been doing more things with dad so that’s good too. Like we went to watch Everest and the Super Blood Moon of 2015 and service and eating out and all sorts of fun things!

Ugh. And dad is starting to drive me crazy so thank goodness they’re almost coming home.

The worst bit is that Grandma keeps calling/coming over. THAT’s the worst, because like, seriously I can stay by myself!!

But eh, whatever.

4. ANNUAL MEETING! 10/3/2015

SO many new changes! I mean like whoa! It’s a historic annual meeting with the GB totally changing the midweek meeting, changing the magazines to be now published every other month and no more dates on the cover! Plus the study edition of the NWT and the new Teach Us book and the new Organized to do Jehovah’s Will book- it’s amazing!

Plus we watched the new sample meeting for family worship and it’s so nice, it’s almost the same as it was but different, you know? Now you really have to study hard for the meetings, no more winging it haha!

5. The Balvenie Craft event in NYC 😀

That was just yesterday, 10/8/2015! SO I went to the city and shopped in the city (Soho) and bought some boots, a blouse 🙂 Then I met RP at Chelsea, the high line and it was so pretty up there! Definitely have to go with the sisters one of these days! But anyways, afterwards, we met up with NYC friends-EP, JK, HC, BSL, PSL, Fabi, SJ and had a free whiskey tasting at the Balvenie event-yum, loved the 17 year whiskey, it was delish! I liked it even better than the 21year portwood! lol

It felt so fancy there, with all their rare craft glasses and everything but the people were the best! I may be a little in love with all the boys haha but hey, a little alcohol in your system is the best aphrodisiac ^_~

Then we went to Chic-fil-a because its the first one to open in NYC but the lines were CRAZY so we decided to eat at a jjajiangmyun place which was good but idk maybe because i was so hyped up, I wasn’t very hungry haha

(Might I add SJ carried my bag and it was heavy so I might have fallen in love with him a little more-that and he has the most brilliant laugh, it’s a nice low timbre with a mellowed out mirth to it-nice!)

After that, the girls and SJ and Fabi we went to this bar in ktown, 별이빛나는밤에 which was real cute and campy with these lights and a korean DJ playing all sorts of requests haha and we had beer and soju.

We had many er, interesting conversations, namely a bout of would you rathers with a different kinds of men and this one poor imaginary clean-but-bald-and-ugly guy hahaha I guess we figured out women are rather shallow!

(But so are men! And Fabi is into non-Koreans-but he is from Kansas! And SJ likes nice legs on a girl so I guess I’m out 🙁 But anyways, I’m sure he’s really popular anyways being Mr. I-own-a-factory-but-I-happen-to-be-super-chill-and-sweet )

Oh! And I met EL (Nina unni’s husband) at the Balvenie event! What are the chances?! Anyways apparently there was a whole slew of Bethelites there but eh they were all from Brooklyn so I wouldn’t know them.

AND EL was with this guy that I’ve been eyeing ALL NIGHT! I swear, he looked just like Andy Kelly from that one show about the 90s on Hulu! So cute!! His name was Jesse (I think) and he’s a Special Pioneer from JC ASL congregation! But seriously, he was so, so stinkin cute but too bad he’s married.

He even lives in Fairview, NJ but eh. W/E. He’s taken.

(He looked so much like JAF too, I was almost taken aback, but this guy was polished. I guess that’s what a wife will do to you, I wonder if JAF is polished too now. Sorry, hadn’t meant to mention him but it happens!)

Today I had to take B to Ikea to buy her a new chair-it’s an early graduation gift-but I can’t drive/walk on account of the horrible, horrible blisters on my feet. They hurt so much, no joke, I couldn’t sleep on account of the pain of the blankets dragging across them ugh.

Well, tomorrow is a new day!

So ends my 2 day vacation haha

Ugh!! Did I mention I ordered a few blazers and a coat from JCREW and the UPS guy (my regular guy, he was out on vacay last week and some other driver named ANDREW delivered) dropped it off at the wrong house!! >:T

(this is all conjecture-my regular UPS guy told me this when I confronted him at the USPS where he was dropping off all of my surepost items) because it says it was delivered last Friday but THERE WAS NOTHING. AND i’ve been really good, checking like every 5 minutes but nothing.

Grrr!!

Time to email JCrew!

So anyways, yes, only a week and a day before the family comes home and i get to see them again!!

Til then!

xoxo
